EDF Energy

EDF Energy - Hinkley Point C

3DW have produced a large scale computer model of EDF Energy proposed new nuclear power station and associated development at Hinkley Point. The model features the proposed new power station site along with the supporting infrastructure such as accommodation campuses for workers, freight logistics facilities, park and ride facilities and a new bypass. The model has played an important part in helping EDF Energy's planning and communications teams in delivering a successful series of public consultation events in 2010.

Richard Mayson, Director of Planning and External Affairs for EDF Energy Nuclear New Build said: "We were delighted by the reception that the interactive 3D model of the Hinkley Point proposals has received at our public exhibitions. It provides a comprehensive overview of the entire area in a way which can be easily understood by local people as they can now see the proposed new developments in context".

Based on the previous success, 3DW have recently updated the model, according to EDF Energy's proposals contained in the Development Consent Order (DCO) application to the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC). The model was again, impressed the public and EDF Energy's internal team during the public consultation events in January 2012.

Eneco

Eneco - Navitus Bay Offshore Wind Farm

The Challenge

The Navitus Bay wind park, a joint venture between Eneco Wind UK Ltd and EDF Energy, has recently completed the third phase of stakeholder and public consultation. The proposals are for between 136 and 218 offshore turbines in Poole Bay at a distance of at least 14 km from the coast.

As always on such schemes, Navitus Bay faced a challenge to effectively communicate the appearance of the development when viewed from different locations along the coastline. There was some debate about the efficacy of traditional photo montages and the number of views that could be offered.

So,the Navitus Bay team turned to 3DW, a Manchester based company who specialise in creating interactive 3D computer models of wind farm developments to address visual impact issues in a dynamic and engaging format. To date, the company has produced 3D models to support over 75 on and off shore wind farm projects.

The Solution

Using a combination of Ordinance Survey terrain data, aerial imagery, mapping data and over 1,000 local photographs, 3DW created a fully interactive 3D model, encompassing an area of 1,600 km2 which represented prominent locations such as The Needles on the Isle of Wight, Bournemouth Pier and Durlston Lighthouse as well as the proposed turbine layouts.

The resulting 3D model of the wind farm was one of the most extensive and detailed ever produced and provides accurate views of the proposed wind farm from any location within the 3D environment. Viewers were able to toggle between different turbine sizes layouts and follow the proposed cable route from the wind turbines to a substation at Three Legged Cross near Ringwood.

The Result

The model was used extensively throughout the third phase of public consultations which took place at eight locations along the coast. Around 2,000 visitors attended the exhibitions and they all had the opportunity to use the 3D model to assess realistic views of the wind farm from any requested viewpoints which would otherwise have been impossible to provide.

Feedback on the 3D model was overwhelmingly positive. Irrespective of whether or not individuals agreed with the Navitus Bay development, the model clearly presented the proposals in a non-technical and unambiguous way which facilitated open, informed and constructive discussions about the scheme.

Peel Energy

Peel Energy - Scout Moor Onshore Wind Farm Extension

Peel Energy is part of the Peel Group and Scout Moor Wind Farm is one of the Peel Energy's Wind Farm site. The site consists 26 wind turbines and has started operating since 2008. Scout Moor is on moorland in the South Pennines situated between the village of Edenfield, Lancashire, and the town of Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

Peel Energy is currently exploring the possibility of expanding Scout Moor Wind Farm. In order to assist in planning and consultation around visual impact issues, 3DW were commissioned to produce an interactive 3D tool which covers approximately 17.5km radius 3d terrain. Within the 3D environment, users can go to any location to explore their views towards the proposed expansions. To assist the planning team in exploring different turbine layouts and turbine heights, the tool enables users to insert, move and remove turbines, set different turbine heights and save different turbine layouts. Further more, users can record viewer's viewing locations and their orientations, this feature has been used extensively during the public exhibitions and helped Peel Energy in identifying sensitive areas toward this scheme.

To sum up, the interactive 3D tool wasn't only successfully used internally within the planning team, but also at the 11 public exhibitions which were held in November 2011.

National Grid

National Gird - Kings Lynn B Connection

National Gird has asked 3DW to create an interactive 3D model to show the different alignments between a proposed 981MW combined cycle gas turbine power station - Kings Lynn B to the national electricity transmission network.

The model contains 4 alignments with two different tower types, users can toggle between the 4 alignments from any location and at any time. Each tower was modelled to a high detail including insulators, jumper leads, tower members, anti-climbing devices and dangerous signage. The conductors were programmed to automatically created in its correct length and sag. User can use this model to insert, move and remove towers, change tower heights and create different alignments. The mode also produced with a navigation map which assists users' navigation and their orientation. In addition, seasonal trees and different sky options were also produced to enable users to examine the line of sights in different season and clouds coverage.

The interactive 3D model was successfully used in public consultations in May 2011, since then, the model has been updated with different tower types and will be used at the next round consultation events in 2012.

Liverpool City Council - Grosvenor Street - Liverpool

3DW are proud to have involved in many regeneration projectswithin Liverpool. 3DW have worked with Liverpool City Council since 2003 and todate, we have delivered more than a dozen interactive 3d models and videoflythroughs.  These projects have focussed on regeneration initiatives inareas which include Anfield, Easby, Garston, Granby and Kensington.

All of the models are fully interactive and allow users tonavigate freely to anywhere they wish to within the 3D environments. The modelswere created to a high level of realistic detail using photographic imagery.Road markings, boundary treatments, landscaping and street furniture wereincluded to increase the realism of the 3d environment. Proposed improvementsand future plans to improve the areas were able to illustrate how theregeneration plans would progress. By a simple key press, this allows users tosee a regeneration scheme in its entirety.

The interactive 3D models and flythroughs were successfullyused to support internal design reviews and public consultations. Compared tomore traditional forms of presentation it dramatically helped residentsunderstand the true extent of the proposed improvements and future plans totheir local area.
