    Presenting contentious plans?
    Are communities concerned about proposals?
Need a convincing means of communication?

3DW provide comprehensive visualisations of power lines, wind farms and other infrastructure, to accurately illustrate the extent of any visual impact associated with a proposed installation.

Our virtual reality models provide realistic landscapes, which include all relevant features such as trees and vegetation, and offer a powerful visual tool. A user can navigate freely around the virtual terrain, immediately responding to questions relating to any specific location or line of sight.

3D solutions developed by 3DW are routinely used by companies who have been able to illustrate the extent of visual impact associated with wind farms (on-shore and off-shore), power lines and other projects.

These VR applications are not only used at public meetings to present to government departments, councils, wildlife groups, residents and landowners, but also used to help planning teams in identifying issues associated with visual impact of a proposed scheme.

    EDF Energy

EDF Energy - Hinkley Point C

3DW have produced a large scale computer model of EDF Energy proposed new nuclear power station and associated development at Hinkley Point. The model features the proposed new power station site along with the supporting infrastructure such as accommodation campuses for workers, freight logistics facilities, park and ride facilities and a new bypass. The model has played an important part in helping EDF Energy's planning and communications teams in delivering a successful series of public consultation events in 2010.

Richard Mayson, Director of Planning and External Affairs for EDF Energy Nuclear New Build said: "We were delighted by the reception that the interactive 3D model of the Hinkley Point proposals has received at our public exhibitions. It provides a comprehensive overview of the entire area in a way which can be easily understood by local people as they can now see the proposed new developments in context".

Based on the previous success, 3DW have recently updated the model, according to EDF Energy's proposals contained in the Development Consent Order (DCO) application to the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC). The model was again, impressed the public and EDF Energy's internal team during the public consultation events in January 2012.

    RWE npower renewables

RWE npower renewables - Gwynt y Mor Offshore Wind Farm

RWE npower renewables commissioned 3DW to create a large scale interactive 3D model of a proposed offshore wind farm. The Gwnyt y Mor site is located 13 kilometres (8 miles) off the North Wales coast.

It was important for RWE npower to install the wind farm in the proposed location, as it offers an ideal combination of shallow waters, high wind speeds and a close proximity to the existing electricity grid network. 3DW proposed a fully interactive 3D model which would be fully animated to include the locations of the cables running to the coat from the proposed site. Flythroughs taking in views of the site included the undersea foundations of the turbines, sub stations, turbine control points and the support boats.

The interactive 3D model was used in many public consultations, RWE npower integral design reviews and meetings with local councillors and planners involved in the scheme. We had many reports of how useful our model was for residents and how well it helped to dismiss any fears that the residents had.

Based on the interactive 3D model, 3DW also produced a promotional video of the scheme. This video is approximately six and half minutes long and is mainly used at public exhibitions to offer the public a better understanding of this offshore scheme. Peel Energy

Peel Energy - Scout Moor Onshore Wind Farm Extension

Peel Energy is part of the Peel Group and Scout Moor Wind Farm is one of the Peel Energy's Wind Farm site. The site consists 26 wind turbines and has started operating since 2008. Scout Moor is on moorland in the South Pennines situated between the village of Edenfield, Lancashire, and the town of Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

Peel Energy is currently exploring the possibility of expanding Scout Moor Wind Farm. In order to assist in planning and consultation around visual impact issues, 3DW were commissioned to produce an interactive 3D tool which covers approximately 17.5km radius 3d terrain. Within the 3D environment, users can go to any location to explore their views towards the proposed expansions. To assist the planning team in exploring different turbine layouts and turbine heights, the tool enables users to insert, move and remove turbines, set different turbine heights and save different turbine layouts. Further more, users can record viewer's viewing locations and their orientations, this feature has been used extensively during the public exhibitions and helped Peel Energy in identifying sensitive areas toward this scheme.

To sum up, the interactive 3D tool wasn't only successfully used internally within the planning team, but also at the 11 public exhibitions which were held in November 2011.

    National Grid

National Gird - Kings Lynn B Connection

3DW were commissioned by National Gird to create an interactive 3D model, to show the different alignments between a proposed 981MW combined cycle gas turbine power station - Kings Lynn B to the national electricity transmission network.

The model contains 4 alignments with two different tower types, users can toggle between the 4 alignments from any location and at any time. Each tower was modelled to a high detail including insulators, jumper leads, tower members, anti-climbing devices etc. The conductors were programmed to automatically stringed in its correct length and sag. User can insert, move and remove towers, change tower heights and create different alignments. The model also comes with a navigation map which assists users' navigation and their orientation. In addition, seasonal trees and different sky options were also produced to enable users to examine the line of sights in different season and clouds coverage.

The interactive 3D model was successfully used in public consultations in May 2011, since then, the model has been updated and will be used at the next round consultation events in 2012.

    AIG

Applied Information Group - Legible London - Piccadilly London

AIG are the design team behind the Legible London project to redesign and rationalise pedestrian street signage across the city.

3DW support this work by creating one of our most detailed 3D models to date, which focuses on Regent Street and extends to Carnaby Street, Piccadilly Circus and Savile Row, including all the iconic buildings in the area.

An interactive 3D model and video fly-through sequences were produced to present the new street sign designs in context and provide a tool for evaluating their effectiveness.

Individuals were asked to navigate their way through the 3D model from Piccadilly stations to specified landmarks, such as the Royal Academy of Art, using the new proposed signage. The placement and design of the new signs were then optimised prior to any installation work.

Blackburn and Darwen Council - Infirmary Waterside - Blackburn

The Infirmary area in Blackburn is part of an initiative within Blackburn and Darwen City Council to regenerate the wider area. 3DW supported this work by creating a 3D model which has evolved over time to reflect current thinking and new ideas prior to any decisions being made.

An interactive 3D model and video fly-throughs were produced to present the area as it looked prior to any interventions. Having created a visualisation which planners and residents could relate to as a true and realistic representation of their neighbourhood, 3dw proceeded to add new development proposals. Animations enable different proposals to be swtiched on or off whilst navigating freely around the virtual world.

At each stage in the development, the Council used the model for internal design reviews and consultations with local residents, to answer questions and discuss the merits of different proposals. In the latter stages, the same models were also used to help with sale of new houses which were also featured in the model.

Lancaster College - Motorway Link Road - Lancaster

3DW was asked to create a large scale, interactive, 3D model for Lancaster and Morecambe College. The problem they had was visualising a proposed new bypass that was in planning and due to be built over college playing fields. 3DW was asked to build a very detailed model of the site and animate different scenarios of the road layout, including entrance and exits to and from the moved playing fields, different fence treatments, traffic signal layouts, quantity of traffic, quantity of tree spear and many other features to help students, parents, tutors, and other residents see what the visual impact of the bypass would have on the area.

The interactive 3D model was used in public consulations and also for students to view inside the college. The model helped people see how the new road layouts would look.

After the initial project of building the road systems, 3DW were also asked to edit the model further down the line to incorporate a new building that was to be added to the college.

Liverpool City Council - Grosvenor Street - Liverpool

3DW are proud to have involved in many regeneration projectswithin Liverpool. 3DW have worked with Liverpool City Council since 2003 and todate, we have delivered more than a dozen interactive 3d models and videoflythroughs.  These projects have focussed on regeneration initiatives inareas which include Anfield, Easby, Garston, Granby and Kensington.

All of the models are fully interactive and allow users tonavigate freely to anywhere they wish to within the 3D environments. The modelswere created to a high level of realistic detail using photographic imagery.Road markings, boundary treatments, landscaping and street furniture wereincluded to increase the realism of the 3d environment. Proposed improvementsand future plans to improve the areas were able to illustrate how theregeneration plans would progress. By a simple key press, this allows users tosee a regeneration scheme in its entirety.

The interactive 3D models and flythroughs were successfullyused to support internal design reviews and public consultations. Compared tomore traditional forms of presentation it dramatically helped residentsunderstand the true extent of the proposed improvements and future plans totheir local area.
